From the ancient Pyramids to the Great Sphinx, it’s no surprise that Egypt is one of the most popular destinations to visit when you look at their cultural background.
Just in case you’ve forgotten, here’s a reminder of Egypt’s history and how it has changed the world.
1) Did you know… the famous Great Pyramid at Giza was built as a burial place for King Khufu and it took over two decades to build. The Pyramid consists of two million blocks of limestone, with each block weighing as much as two elephants. It towers up to around 460 feet.
2) The Sahara Desert is the worlds’ largest hot desert, accumulating over 3,630,000 square miles –roughly the size of the United States. The desert also covers large sections of Algeria, Chad, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and many more African countries.
3) The ancient Egyptians were the first nation to have a year calculated into 365 days and then dividing into twelve months. They also invented clocks.
4) The River Nile is the largest river in Africa and the world. Around 22% of the river runs through Egypt. Today, the Nile remains a vital pathway that is essential to millions of African farmers. Egypt still imports 40 percent of its grain via the river. The Nile also runs through Sudan, Burundi, Ethiopia, Zaire, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania. The famous Pyramids were helped greatly by the Nile, with blocks of stone from the river being used.
5) The Great Sphinx of Giza statue is a combination of a large half-human and half-lion statue on the Giza Plateau, at the west bank of the River Nile, by Cairo. The word, ‘Sphinx,’ is referred to the head of a man. It was believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians in the third millennium BC.
6) The capital city of the Mediterranean country is Cairo. The word Cairo defines ‘The Triumphant’. The city was found in 648 AD amongst other cities and villages, including its former capital city, Memphis, Heliopolis.
7) Now you can’t finish a fact file piece on Egypt without including mentioning Tutankhamen. Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon discovered Tutankhamen's tomb in the Valley of kings, surrounded by precious grave goods, in his golden coffin. The most famous Pharaoh inherited the thrown at the age of eight-years-old before being found dead at the age of 17.
He is thought to have been the son of the ‘heretic king’, Akhenaten. There is uncertainty to what led to his death, most noting a neck injury being the reason, though some speculate he may have been assassinated. You can visit the historic tomb on a tour in Cairo.
