From the 1st September, UK companies exporting to the US will no longer be able to take advantage of the "de minimis" threshold, for lower valued goods. Goods valued between $1 - $2,500 will now be subject to Duties and Taxes based upon the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS). These shipments will require Informal/Formal entry processing in the US.
Previously, goods exported to the US from the UK with a value under $800, were exempt from US Duties and Taxes, as they were under the "de minimus" threshold.
The change will add significant costs to UK businesses exporting smaller value items to the US, who will now be required to complete customs declaration forms for each item sent. US importers will likely pass on the extra costs to customers.
The most recent estimate of the value of goods shipped from the UK to the US under the de minimis exemption was £5 billion a year in 2021.
