A United Kingdom (UK) city of culture is picked every four years. Last night Bradford was awarded the UK city of culture for 2025. Bradford will take over from Coventry, the current UK city of culture which was awarded the title in 2021.
The finalists alongside Bradford were Country Durham, Southampton and Wrexham. Nadine Dorries MP (culture secretary) announced Bradford as the winner last night on the BBC 1 programme The One Show.
Winning the title of UK city of culture will help the city of Bradford raise its profile in the UK and internationally. Estimates by the team behind the Bradford bid calculate the win could bring up to £700m of investment into the city of Bradford, creating thousands of jobs.
Bradford's council leader Susan Hinchcliffe said the win would bring "so many opportunities" and the area had started "to come to life as never before".
A number of live performances and events will be held throughout Bradford and the surrounding borough in 2025.
