Major change for importers and exporters with CHIEF replacement of CDS

The existing UK customs declaration platform CHIEF (Customs Handling Imports and Export Freight) is being replaced by CDS (The Customs Declaration Service).

HMRC (HM Revenue and Customs) has recently announced an update on the closure of the CHIEF customs platform. After 31 March 2023, all businesses must declare exports and/or imports of goods via the CDS platform.

The CDS platform went live in 2018 and is currently used for declarations for Rest of World and Northern Ireland.  The latest announcement can be found on the GOV.UK website and can be viewed here.

Services on CHIEF will be withdrawn by HMRC in two stages:

  • 30 September 2022: import declarations close on CHIEF
  • 31 March 2023: export declarations close on National Exports System (NES)/CHIEF

If you have any questions about the impact of the transition to CDS for your business, please do feel free to contact us on 0333 1234 747 or email sales@tudorfreight.com.
