  • Shipping giant Maersk to lead the industry with £1bn spend on new green container ships
The shipping industry has been grappling for some time with how to reduce its carbon footprint. Approximately 90 per cent of global trade is transported by sea, and accounts for nearly 3% of global carbon dioxide emissions.

The IMO (International Maritime Organisation), the UN’s shipping agency, aims to reduce the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions to half their 2008 levels by 2050.

The world's largest shipping company Maersk made a major announcement this week investing £1bn to purchase 8 hybrid container vessels that can be fuelled by both green carbon neutral methanol and traditional fuel. The vessels will be made by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Maersk is under increasing pressure from key customers such as H&M, Microsoft and Unilever who are reducing carbon emissions throughout their supply chains. End consumers are becoming ever more conscious about the environmental credentials of companies who they purchase from.

If you are looking at how to improve the efficiency of the supply chains for your business, please do feel free to contact us at Tudor International Freight, on 0333 1234 747 or email sales@tudorfreight.com.
