  • Delay to implementation of UK border checks post Brexit
The UK Government has delayed the introduction of border control checks on goods imported from the European Union (EU) into Great Britain (GB).

Customs checks on some goods coming into GB from the EU will be delayed by 6 months in order to allow businesses and the UK Government more time to prepare.

Health certificates will need to be completed in respect of food and/or animal products imported into GB from the EU. These will now come into force from 1 October 2021.

Physical inspections on food and animal products due to start from 1 July 2021 will now begin in January 2022.

The terms of the Brexit deal were agreed between the UK and EU in The Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) on 24 December 2020.

In line with the TCA, the EU has already been implementing full checks on goods exported from GB to the EU from 1 January 2021.

This means that British exporters now face non-tariff barriers when exporting to the EU (and Northern Ireland) and are at a disadvantage to EU competitors who have ongoing free access to the UK market.

If you would like advice regarding the changes to importing and/or exporting to/from the EU, please contact us at Tudor International Freight, on 0333 1234 747 or email sales@tudorfreight.com.
