Why is the 18th April of April important to Zimbabwe?
Zimbabwe Independence Day is celebrated each year on the 18th of April. The date is the anniversary of the declaration of independence from the United Kingdom on 18th April 1980. The day marks the end of Rhodesia, and the birth of Zimbabwe.
The national day of celebration brings people together and is celebrated by the government of Zimbabwe at both a national and district level. The 18th of April is a public holiday in Zimbabwe.
The tradition entails the president (currently Emmerson Mnangagwa) performing public speeches relating to the current national themes with large crowds spectating.
The official ceremony is followed by parades, entertainment, music and various types of performances, as well as games of football. It is also common for free food to be handed out.
