Why is the 27th of April significant for South Africa?
April 27th is a public holiday in South Africa and is known as “Freedom Day”. Freedom Day commemorates the first elections held in South Africa post apartheid, on 27 April 1994. The elections were the first to take place in South Africa where anyone over the age of 18 from any race could vote. After the elections in 1994, Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa.
Freedom day is always celebrated on the 27th of April each year and is celebrated in various ways. Many South African people visit historic places that honour the struggle for democracy in South Africa. These places include Robben island, where Nelson Mandela was held as a political prisoner for many years.
On Freedom day many South African families have a special meal or a braai (Barbeque) to celebrate.
